About Derek Fouarge for VC Treasurer-Tax Collector
My Story
I was raised in Ventura County and proud to still call it home. As the son of a Navy Seabee, I learned the value of hard work, discipline, and service to others from an early age. My father’s dedication to 20 years in the armed forces and my grandfather’s leadership within his own community, stood as stark examples to my younger self. They instilled in me a deep respect for maintaining high standards and that leading with integrity will shape your character and work ethic.
I graduated in 2003 from Oxnard High School and began working at Buena Lanes bowling alley while taking college courses. During that time, I had the opportunity to learn firsthand about community involvement, responsibility, supervision, and customer service. Attributes and lessons that would later help shape my approach to leadership and public service.
I was hired as a student worker in the Ventura County Treasurer-Tax Collector’s Office in 2007. What started as part-time work quickly became enthusiasm for the office and its dealings. I was fascinated by how the County worked, how property taxes fund schools and public safety, how investments protect taxpayer dollars, and how financial systems support every community in Ventura County.
Once officially hired in 2008, I immersed myself in learning everything I could about county government, public finance, and fiscal stewardship. Over the years, I grew within the County system, taking on more responsibility and leadership roles.
Now, nearly two decades later, I remain deeply committed to public service. Ventura County isn’t just where I work, it’s home. It’s where my family lives, where my son is growing up, and where I want to ensure a strong financial future for generations to come.
My careers journey began in the Treasurer-Tax Collector’s Office and now I am excited to run a campaign to lead it. It is my intention to do so with accountability, trust, and a continued commitment to public service.
